Are You Prepared For A Emergency?

This month is national pet first aid month… Are you really prepared for that panic moment, in which either your self or your pet hurts themselves or falling poorly?

Truth is, a lot of us don’t give it a second thought until it happens. Having a plan in place can really make the difference between panic and precision.

Here’s the questions you need to be asking yourself and how to prepare in an emergency situation.

You’re out for a lovely walk, and your dog cuts themself… what have you got on you to wrap it?

Can you carry them to the car/home or Who’s local enough to you, to call for help?

Can you give the person you’ve called your what three words location, or are you scrambling for the most distinctive landmark?

Should you need a vet, can you call them from your phone book. or are you relying on the fact you’ll have enough internet coverage to google their number.

..Taking the chance you can google it at the time, could mean you’re in a panic and trying to get a signal by roaming around, causing further distress to your dog.

Small animal injuries or illness the same applies as the above, you may need to call someone to help, but ensure you always have a carrier available for transportation to the vets too!

Save The Local Vets Numbers & Address In Your Contacts.

What do you have in place if you was to fall poorly or injuried? Whilst animals are in your care?

If your clients of ours, for either our pet care or our training services you’ll have seen, we ask for emergency contacts in our sign-ups forms for any of our services.

it may be because you, your pet, or we (if we are solely in charge of a pet in that moment) are ill, have been injured, or there is no one to care for your pet, or a decision needs to be made on your behalf.

This is paramount as a professional pet care provider. This information is provided by our clients and kept up to date. Any Clients of ours can update their emergency contact at any time via our app.

what about those emergencys with yourself that happen at a drop of a hat?

Last week a routine appointment turned into a 12-hour hospital visit for my dad, but this got me thinking.. if I hadn’t been in the Country, would we have had a backup plan for both my dogs, rabbit and gecko …. The answer is yes! We have someone who not only has a key, but also knows our pets too, ,and we are the same back up plan for their dog too.

its important to have a few things in place for this kind of emergency.

  • Contact and agreement of someone who can take over your animals care.
  • Access to the house with a spare key, or key box.
  • A list in the house of the meals, meds and needs for your pets, also their vets details (We have ours stuck to back of a cupboard)
  • Even if this is a family member as first choice, we would advise every single owner to consider signing up with a pet professional as a back up should family/friends not be able to get to your pet at that moment for any reason.
  • in my walk bag i carry a bit of paper that contains my own emergency contacts, my teams numbers, and also anything of importance like medical needs etc.

This is a very brief overview of what sort of things we can do to prepare for a emergency, i hope this is never needed but its also given our readers some food for thought!
